6. Create a Text Area question with a mark scheme

Text Area question type caters for short-form responses (i.e short answer qusetion). This question type does not give students the editing functionality when composing their responses. Author can select the number of lines available for the question and by default, the response area expands automatically as students enter their responses.

Tasks to complete

Create a Text Area question and a mark scheme 

  1. Click on the New section tab on your question set.
  2. Enter the section name "Australian languages and cultures".
  3. Click on the Create new button.
  4. Select Text Area under the Manually marked questions list.
  5. Enter "Your languages" into the New Question textbox, following the question naming convention guide.
  6. Delete Replace with question text and enter the following points into the question text area:
  • "What is the national language of Australia?
  • What language(s) do you speak? List all of them even if you can say only a few words.
  • Which context(s) do you use the language(s) you listed in the previous question?"
  1. Click on the interaction area (Fill in your answer here).
  2. Optionally, you can edit the Prompt as you wish. "Fill in your answer here" is added by default.
  3. Click on the Size button.
  4. Enter "5" for the number of text lines.
  5. The option 'Expand automatically' is enabled by default.
  6. Click on the Close button.
  7. Click on the Marks button.
  8. Change the Maximum marks from 10 to 3.
  9. Click on the Mark scheme button.
  10. Click on the Create New button.
  11. Enter "Your language(s)" into the textbox.
  12. Delete Replace with question text and enter:
  • "Include English as the national language of Australia - 1 mark
  • List the language(s) they speak - 1 mark
  • Identify the context(s) they use the language(s) they speak - 1 mark"
  1. Click on the Save button.
  2. Click on the Done button.
  3. Click on the Labels button, enter "your name", "test name" and click on the plus button.

Note: Labels are useful for the author (e.g. course coordinator) to filter the questions for future use.

  1. Click on the Save button.
  2. Click on the Preview button. The preview will be opened on a new tab on your browser.
  3. Close the preview window, or navigate back to the original question tab.
  4. Click on the Close button.
