Turnitin assignments

At UQ Turnitin is the most popular choice for individual text-based assignments (e.g. Word, PDF and PowerPoint). Turnitin has an online marking and feedback capability which includes a text matching function to help coordinators gauge originality. The text matching report compares submissions with web content, previously submitted assignments and journals. Refer to the Turnitin guides for step-by-step instructions.

Professor Pauline Ford discusses her first experience with Turnitin assignments.

Blackboard group assignments

Using the Groups and Blackboard Assignment tool in combination allows you to set up group project submission links. Any student in the group can submit the assignment and all members automatically receive the assignment results and feedback. The Blackboard online marking function allows you to annotate assignments and provide feedback using a rubric. Refer to the Groups and Assignment tool guides for step-by-step instructions.

Dr Bryan Morgan shares his views on the benefits of using the Blackboard assignment tool to mark group assignments.

Video assignments

Kaltura, UQ's eLearning video server can be used by students to submit video assignments. You can also set up submission links using the Blackboard Assignment tool which allows you to use the online marking function to give comments and feedback using a rubric. Refer to the Video and Audio upload and Assignment tool guides for step-by-step instructions.

Dr David MacDonald shares his views on using video assignments to allow students to demonstrate their interview and communication skills.

Support resources for students

Many students experience a wide range of issues which cause stress and can impact negatively upon their learning or quality of life. As UQ teaching staff it is important that you are aware of the services available to students and refer them for expert help and support.

The following key services are available to students to assist them with study related or personal issues:

  • UQ Student Services provides services such as counselling, disability, faith, accommodation and help with studying, assignment and exams.
  • Student Union SHOC site provides services to assist students with education and equity issues, employment, gender & sexuality, legal, migration and welfare.
  • UQ Library provides information and services such as computer access, research skills, software training and 24/7 study spaces.
  • If you believe a student is in need of counselling support you may need to encourage them to seek help from Student Services Counselling or you can contact Student Services directly for further advice.

Order your Summer semester course

You can request your Learn.UQ course for Summer semester 2017 now!

1. Use the online Site Request form located on the Staff tab in Learn.UQ. This form also allows you to request a copy of course content from a previous semester.

2. Publish your Electronic Course Profile (ECP) for a blank course template to be created automatically within 48 hours. For content to be copied, request a 'copy' through the Staff tab mentioned above.

Refer to the Course Request guide for step-by-step instructions.

Group Peer Assessment tool

The Learn.UQ Group Peer Assessment tool can be used to allow students to evaluate individual contributions of group members to a group project. This tool could be used formatively to identify dysfunctional groups early in a project and put in place appropriate support strategies.

The tool allows you to set evaluation criteria using Likert questions and also optionally require students to justify their evaluation with a comment. The tool includes features to collect student responses, collated responses, calculate average scores, email non-submitters, facilitate moderation of results and return results to the Grade Centre. If you are interest in implementing this tool in Semester 2, email

Video conferencing with Zoom

Zoom is a multi-format video conferencing and online meeting solution available to UQ staff and students. Once you have Zoom installed on your device, you will be able to host, join, and schedule Zoom meetings, share your presentation content, and chat message with other Zoom users around the world. Zoom's simple interface and cross-platform compatibility makes it an ideal personal video conferencing solution. For additional information, refer to the Zoom video conferencing user guide.

iThenticate - Text matching for research papers

The iThenticate text matching system for researchers is now available to all UQ staff. While iThenticate uses the same underlying technology and database as Turnitin, the functionality, user experience and reports are designed to meet the needs of researchers. iThenticate allows you to quickly upload, check and examine documents using a web-based interface. Researchers can share documents and collaborate in groups. iThenticate includes in-depth analytics to provide visibility of content submissions and levels of originality over time.

Refer to the Getting started with iThenticate guide for step-by-step instructions.

Staff using student accounts

If you have students teaching or tutoring in your course, you need to enrol them using their staff usernames (you may have to ask them to apply for an account). Tutors enrolled in your course using a student account will receive three notifications and after 14 days, their access to the course will be disabled. External (nk_) accounts are not an acceptable alternative for UQ staff.
