What is the Group tool?

The Groups tool in Learn.UQ allows you to organise students into groups and assign the groups tools such as email, discussion boards, blogs, journals, wikis, file exchange area and task lists. The Group tool also allows you to assign tools to SI-net Tutorial and Practical groups. Blackboard assignments can also be assigned to groups.

Why would I use the Groups tool?

To assign students to groups to faciliate group tasks and assessment.

Other considerations

The SI-net groups Tutorial and Practical are automatically created in Blackboard during the first week of semester.

Assignment tool (Bb): Blackboard group assignments only have to be submitted by one member of the group and all members automatically receive the same mark in Grade Centre (this can be overridden).

The group tools below can also be used as assessment items. You can either allocate all group members the same mark or mark student's contributions individually.

Blog: A blog is an online journal that can include links to resources, multimedia as well as text in it's entries.

Journal: A journal is a private blog for communication between the teaching staff and individual groups.

Wiki: A wiki is a collaborative space where students can add and edit content.

FAQs

  • FAQ - Group limitations

The only way to generate a list of which students are in a group is by using the Bulk Group Manager tool.

See the View group enrolments page to view a list of students individually.

Known Issues

  • Known Issue: Bulk Group Manager Success Message

    There is no Success message.

When the Bulk Group Manager tool has completed it will display a Failed results message and list all the failed items by default.

If there are no Failed results the Failed Results message still displays however the list will be empty.

  • Known Issue: Bulk Group Manager dots in name

The Bulk Group Manager Tool currently has a problem if the Group Set Name or the individual Groups have a ‘.’ in the name.

eg. “Group 1.0” will fail “Group 1-0” will pass.

Although a ‘.’ can be in the name if the Group Set or Group is created manually.
